What is Counselling?
Counselling is having a safe place to talk to a qualified Counsellor about whats happening in your life. The Counsellor will not judge you or be shocked at what you say to them. Very often people feel that they should be able to "manage their problems on their own" however being able to ask for help when we need it is a very wise thing to do. It also can be very frightening, so here are some of the things people worry about:
What happens in the 1st session?
The first session gives the client a chance to meet the Counsellor and make up their mind if they like them enough to be able to work with them. The Counsellor will tell the person a little bit about what is involved in the Counselling process. There wil be initial paperwork to be filled in to give the Counsellor a better picture of what is happening in the persons life. Counsellor and client will agree on such things as - the next appointment, condidentiality, how many sessions, appointment times, and cost. If clients are under 18 a parent or guardian will be asked to attend the first session .
What if I dont want to carry on?
You can let the Counsellor know that you do not want to make another appointment without giving a reason why.
Will it be confidential?
Yes, with the some exceptions which will be discussed with you in the first session.
What will be expected of me?
Counselling can involve drawing, role play, learning coping skills, practicing different ways of dealing with situation as well as talking. People very often feel that they will be under pressure to "say something" but the Counsellor will be aware of this and will put you at your ease.
How can it help?
Some people find that "just being able to talk about things" helps. You might discuss: family issues, relationshios, sexuality, school, work/lack of work. addictions, self harm, depression, anxiety, anger, self esteem and many more. Other people discover things about themselves that they want to change and find that the support and encouragement they get from Counselling helps.
